Reddit Answers shown as the Reddit mascot judging cards, keeping a highly upvoted one and dropping personal stories

Reddit Answers, the assistant that writes a reply from Reddit threads when you ask a question in the site’s search bar, doesn’t pick comments at random. A research team at the University of Illinois ran 10,000 questions through the tool, three times each, and traced every answer back to the comments it drew on. The pattern is hard to miss: Reddit’s AI mostly repeats what was already visible, already upvoted and written in a formal tone. For a business trying to show up in those threads, that’s genuinely useful to know, because it hints at which kind of contribution gets picked up. Here’s what the study measured, what it doesn’t prove, and how to use it without drifting into manipulation.

TL;DR

A University of Illinois study analyzed 30,000 Reddit Answers responses, traced back through 14.68 million comments.

The comments that get quoted are already highly upvoted, posted early, and usually direct replies to the question.

A formal tone raises the odds of selection, while personal storytelling lowers them.

For a brand, the contribution that works arrives early, answers directly and sticks to facts.

What the Reddit Answers Audit Actually Measured

92% of the comments Reddit Answers quotes reply directly to the question, according to the University of Illinois study

Reddit Answers is Reddit’s generative AI tool: you ask a question, and it writes a summary from comments posted on the platform, with links back to the threads it used. It answers straight from Reddit’s search bar, which puts it front and center for anyone looking for an answer on the site. Reddit also holds an unusual place in AI answers more broadly, even though its citations collapsed inside ChatGPT this summer, as we covered in our piece on Reddit citations collapsing in ChatGPT.

The paper is called “The Wisdom of the Loudest,” by Agam Goyal, Eshwar Chandrasekharan and colleagues. It was posted on September 13 to the arXiv preprint server, which means it hasn’t been peer reviewed yet. The team sent 10,000 questions to the tool three times each, for 30,000 answers, then matched them against 14.68 million comments. The questions came from 20 advice and support communities, from r/personalfinance to r/AskDocs.

Matt G. Southern walked through the numbers in his September 17 write-up for Search Engine Journal, and together they paint a fairly precise picture of the comment Reddit’s AI prefers to repeat.

The Comment Reddit Answers Chooses to Quote

Popularity comes first. Selected comments sit at the 91st percentile of votes in their thread, at the median, against the 45th percentile for comments that were passed over. They also show up early: a median of 1.2 hours after the question, versus 5.9 hours for the rest. And 92% of them reply directly to the original post rather than sitting deep in a side conversation. The quoted comment is usually the one already on top.

Style matters next. A comment one standard deviation more formal had 49% higher odds of being selected, and the effect held up once other factors were accounted for. Directive wording, with words like “should” and “must,” nudged in the same direction. Longer comments and comments that link to an outside source were also picked more often. On the other side, markers of personal experience, such as first-person pronouns or past-tense storytelling, lowered the odds, and so did supportive language.

Some of the other ratios Southern reports are worth pausing on, because they’re larger than the effect of tone. A comment one standard deviation higher in the vote ranking had 2.88 times the odds of being picked. A comment one standard deviation longer had 1.79 times the odds, and a comment containing an external link had 2.25 times the odds. Put together, the profile describes the traditional markers of a thorough answer that readers already rewarded. That matters for anyone tempted to reverse-engineer the tool: the strongest signals are the ones you can only earn from other readers.

One detail shows what summarizing does to the content. In a sample of 1,000 questions, first-person language dropped from 3.3% in the quoted comments to 0.06% in the answers the tool wrote. A lived experience turns into general advice, stripped of the voice of the person who shared it. The authors sum it up plainly: generative search is not neutral summarization.

The limits deserve attention, though. The researchers stress that the study is observational and shouldn’t be read causally: formal comments get picked more often, but nobody knows whether formality itself is what triggers the choice. The communities studied are advice forums, and the findings may not carry over to other topics or to other AI assistants.

What Reddit Answers Means for a Brand That Takes Part

What gets picked by Reddit Answers: a highly upvoted comment, a source link, a longer answer, a more formal tone

With Reddit Answers, the platform now has its own assistant filtering its own discussions. For a business, simply being present in a thread isn’t enough anymore: the contribution needs the shape the tool tends to pick up.

Turned into practical habits, and with the caution a correlational study calls for, the findings point to three. Reply early, within the first hours, and directly under the question rather than inside a sub-thread. Write a complete, factual answer that gives a clear recommendation. And when it genuinely helps, cite a source people can check, with a link. Skip the sales pitch in the reply itself, since the tool strips personal framing anyway and keeps the substance. None of this is new for a good contributor, but the study shows Reddit’s AI quotes these replies more often.

Watch out for the opposite reflex. Buying votes, running fake accounts or posting disguised promotional messages means gaming exactly the signal the tool looks at first, with a real risk to the brand’s reputation. Votes remain the top factor, and the only lasting way to earn them is to be useful. It’s the same logic we saw with brand mentions, which carry more weight than links in AI answers. A useful reply on Reddit serves the human reader and the assistant that will summarize it at the same time.
